Human Induced Hazards

Any environmental degradation induced by man becomes hazard & disaster when it assumes alarming proportion & causes irreparable loss to human society. The man - induced environmental hazards & disasters may be caused through a variety of human activities both of intentional & unintentional character. The man - induced environmental hazards & disasters- fall in three broad categories such as :

  1. Man induced physical hazards such as landslides, earthquakes & accelerated rate of soil erosion;
  2. Man induced chemical hazards such as release of toxic chemicals & dumping & exposure at later date of toxic chemicals, nuclear explosion, leakage of crude oil from oil tankers into oceanic water etc. &
  3. Man induced biological hazards such as population explosion, eutrophication etc.

Man Induced Earthquakes
Man Induced Lethal Toxic Chemical Hazards
Case studies of Human Induces Hazards

The use of chemical & orgasmic weapons is another way of causing disasters & lethal environmental hazards. Man also accelerates the rate of natural hazards through his constructional activities & land use practices. For example removal of vegetation & construction of roads in the landslide prone areas increase the frequency & magnitude of landslides in the fragile mountainous region. Similarly, deforestation in the mountainous source catchments of major rivers draining over extensive alluvial plains (such as Ganga plains of India) increase the frequency & magnitude of floods which is primarily due to extensive rainfall in the catchment areas. Man's constructional & excavational activities also increase the frequency & intensity of natural earthquakes & so on.
