On 12 January 2010, 4:53 pm Haiti time ( 21:53:10 UTC) an earthquake registering 7.3 on the Richter scale struck the Caribbean Island of Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. The initial earthquake spawned dozens of aftershocks about 15 of which were of a magnitude of 5.0 or greater. While earthquakes are not uncommon in the Caribbean island country, the Haiti earthquake's intensity surprised experts. Haiti is part of the island of Hispaniola, which also hosts the Dominican Republic. The last major earthquake to strike Haiti's side of the island was in 1860. This disaster appears to be one if not the most devastating if compared with the Tsunami disaster that happened in December 2004 and may even be the biggest natural disaster in modern history.
