Gender in Disaster Management

Engendered policy analysis

Policy analysis is the process of examining the effects of an intended policy action on society. Society is men, women and children.

The analysis looks at what should be done to reduce the negative effects of policy so as not make any member of society worse off after its implementation.

Because disasters do not discriminate in terms of intensity and impact, Disaster Risk Reduction strategies should aim to obtain maximum participation of both men and women.

However, because vulnerability tends to be higher in women, children and elderly, policy implementation should include both qualitative and quantitative assessments of the effects of the intended policy on them.
