The Chief Executive Officer of the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA), Ms Mapatane Kgomo, accompanied by a MISA technical team, will undertake a site inspection in Mpumalanga Province to assess infrastructure damage following the devastating floods experienced during the summer season where severe and continuous rainfall resulted in widespread flooding across parts of the province. Ten of the seventeen municipalities reported significant damage to critical infrastructure. Prior to the site visits, Ms Kgomo will engage Municipal Managers in a strategic meeting to review the extent of damage as per the assessments conducted by municipalities. As part of its support role, MISA will verify municipal business plans detailing the scope of damage and estimated costs and provide technical assistance on appropriate intervention measures. This includes support with infrastructure designs, construction management, and ensuring that restoration efforts are implemented in line with applicable standards and climate-resilient principles. The visit demonstrates MISA’s continued implementation of its mandate in support of the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) and the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), as outlined in the Municipal Disaster Recovery Grant Framework. MISA will continue to monitor and support municipalities’ infrastructure recovery and stabilisation efforts to ensure the restoration of basic services and to enhance the resilience of municipal infrastructure against future climate-related events.
