Deputy Minister Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe today delivered the closing address of the Africa–Europe–Middle East (AEME) Earthquake Response Exercise, emphasising human vulnerability, shared responsibility and the need for global partnerships in disaster management.

He reminded delegates that no country can face disasters alone, saying: “It is only through partnerships, collaboration, mutual respect and a shared sense of humanity that we find real solutions.”

Reflecting on the week-long simulation in Nelson Mandela Bay, he said the exercise showcased the discipline, coordination and operational excellence of South Africa’s disaster response system. He also called for greater innovation in engineering and resilient infrastructure, noting that buildings, not tremors, often claim lives.

The Deputy Minister stressed that disasters affect rural, traditional and vulnerable communities most deeply, calling for inclusive and culturally sensitive readiness efforts.

He thanked international teams, the UN system, NGOs and all partners for their cooperation, and paid tribute to South Africa’s responders: “Your skills, discipline and courage reflect the hopes of our nation.”

He noted that South Africa’s successful G20 Presidency reaffirmed global confidence in its disaster-response leadership, underscoring the need for disaster risk reduction that advances technical readiness, social equity and sustainable development.

He concluded by thanking the National Disaster Management Centre and urging that lessons from the exercise strengthen policy, coordination, traditional leadership engagement and long-term community resilience.
