The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, will officially hand over the completed works of the Ekuvukeni Water Supply Project in Alfred Duma Local Municipality, uThukela District, KwaZulu-Natal.
This milestone event marks a significant advancement in delivering reliable water supply to the people of Ekuvukeni and surrounding communities. The project was implemented by the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) with funding from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), under the guidance of the Department of Cooperative Governance.
The Ekuvukeni Water Supply Project addresses long-standing challenges of inadequate water infrastructure in wards 30 to 36 of Alfred Duma Local Municipality, collectively serving over 14,500 households (approximately 75,655 people).
Key completed works include: - Construction of bulk and reticulation pipelines:
- Installation of 52 valve chambers, 25 communal standpipes, and multiple yard connections
- Partial refurbishment of the Oliphantskop Water Treatment Works and the Petronella Booster Pump Station
- Construction of an additional 8ML steel reticulation tank to enhance water storage capacity.
As a result of these interventions, thousands of households in areas such as Ekuvukeni, Uitval, Tholeni, Emabhekazi, and Kwahlathi now enjoy improved and more reliable access to water.
Beyond infrastructure, the project has delivered tangible socio-economic benefits:
- Job Creation: Over 32 local labourers, including youth and women, were employed and trained in construction and technical skills.
- Enterprise Development: Eight local subcontractors were appointed through the Project Steering Committee, benefitting from contracts worth over R6.1 million.
- Community Services: Communal standpipes have been installed in schools and villages, ensuring access to clean water where household connections are still limited.
