The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional AIairs (CoGTA), Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, held a bilateral engagement with the United Nations OIice for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) representative, Mr Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNDRR.

The discussions focused on advancing disaster risk reduction objectives by strengthening collaboration with UNDRR as both a knowledge partner and the Secretariat of the DRR Working Group. This engagement took place alongside the G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRR WG) proceedings.

During the meeting, Mr Kishore commended South Africa’s leadership under its Presidency of the G20 DRR WG, noting that the outcomes achieved thus far reflect strong commitment, eIective coordination, and a clear vision for enhancing disaster resilience. He also reiterated the UN’s readiness to continue supporting the working groups, while acknowledging the uncertainties that lie ahead.

Minister Hlabisa emphasised the global nature of disaster risks, stating: “Disasters are not confined by borders; they aIect the human race as a whole. It is only through collaboration among all nations that we can truly safeguard lives and build resilience for the future.”

The meeting reaIirmed a shared commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods from disaster risks. Both parties underscored the importance of sustained collaboration, strategic partnerships, and global cooperation to strengthen disaster preparedness and build long-term resilience.
