Today marked the conclusion of the SADC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Disaster Risk Management, held in Zimbabwe from 11–14 May 2026.
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, in his capacity as Chairperson, led robust discussions focused on strengthening regional disaster preparedness, improving coordinated response mechanisms, and advancing resilience across the SADC region.
The meeting brought together Member States, international cooperating partners, business, civil society, and disaster management stakeholders, reflecting a shared commitment to collaboration and practical action in the face of growing climate-related disasters.
Throughout the engagements, Member States emphasised the importance of being proactive rather than reactive to disaster-related challenges. Key priorities included investing in resilient infrastructure, strengthening early warning systems, enhancing the use of technology, and improving regional preparedness and response capacity.
Member States further reaffirmed their commitment to supporting one another when disasters strike, recognising that unity, coordination, and collective action remain critical to safeguarding lives, protecting livelihoods, and building resilient communities across the region.
SADC’s resolve remains firm: through cooperation and practical implementation, the region will continue working towards a safer, more resilient, and sustainable future.
