MINISTER HLABISA URGES COMMUNITIES TO EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION DURING THE INCLEMENT WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE LONG WEEKEND

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, urges communities in the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga to exercise extreme caution. This caution follows follows a warning by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) about possible cold, wet and windy conditions during the long weekend.

According to the SAWS, a cold front is expected to affect the Western and Northern Cape on Sunday, 9 August 2026. It is expected to bring cold to very cold, wet and windy conditions as well as rough sea conditions, with snowfalls over the mountainous areas.

These conditions are expected to spread to the Eastern Cape as the system moves eastwards.

On Monday, 10 August 2026, the inclement weather is expected to deepen even further as it moves over the central to eastern parts of the country, spreading the cold to very cold conditions with rain and showers further inland. Scattered to widespread rain and showers are also expected over the southern parts of the country.

Snow is expected over the mountainous areas of the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. While there is a low probability of light snow over some of the higher-lying areas outside these regions, confidence remains highest over the mountain ranges mentioned.

“We appeal to communities in the affected areas, particularly those in informal settlements, to be vigilant. Motorists must avoid driving through mountain passes where heavy snow or ice is anticipated,” Minister Hlabisa said.

Since it is a long weekend, Minister urges many people who are traveling to various destinations to be cautious on the roads. Where possible, those travelling to affected areas should consider postponing travels.

Informing and cautioning people about the forecasted inclement weather conditions is meant to save lives and livelihoods.

The National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) is working with emergency services and local disaster management teams and are on high alertto respond and prepare rapid-response resources for potential flooding, tree falls and power outages.

Members of the public are advised to stay informed by monitoring official weather advisories, severe weather warnings and updates issued continuously by the SAWS.
